MPA Annual General Meeting

The Music Publishers Association (MPA) here in the UK held their annual general meeting on Tuesday June 25 at The Royal Institution of Great Britain in London. Chairman Chris Butler addressed the meeting and spoke about the changes that have occurred over the past 12 months, with the hot topic being the recovery plan for the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS).  Chris spoke about the difficulties MCPS has faced with the decline of the physical market but was pleased the MPA could retain ownership and are now working towards getting MCPS back to profitability.

Stephen Navin then addressed the meeting and gave his final speech as CEO in true Navin fashion, filled with historic references to the modern ways of licensing and paid tribute to the French for their radical thinking in this area.  After he thanked everyone for their hard work and involvement over his seven years at the MPA, the crowd rose to their feet for a standing ovation which humbled the soon to be Oxford University student.

The event concluded with Navin hosting an “In Conversation” with the new CISAC president, Jean Michel Jarre. When asked what his main focus point will be as president, Jarre spoke passionately about how the creative community needs to come together and develop a culture around intellectual property. He made reference to how the issues and awareness of the environment have become “trendy” over the years and explained how the methods in creating this culture could be adopted to intellectual property to better educate the general public and those inside the industry.

Towards the end of the conversation, Stephen Navin and Chris Butler presented Jean Michel with a score of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. This new edition, produced to mark the centenary of the work, is an autograph of Stravinsky’s original manuscript. Jarre has previously attributed a live performance of “The Rite of Spring” to his “musical awakening”.

JMJ was presented with an autograph of Stravinsky’s original manuscript for The Rite of Spring. Navin by contrast had to make do with a tiny bike.

The new issue of Music Week is now available to read online.
